Abstract: The early Chinese cabbage(Hybrid No55)was found to senesce sooner than the late one(IZ-28)in terms of the beginning arid rate of chlorophill loss.Ethylene production, respiration rate arid peroxidase activity in Hybrid No.55 were markedly higher than in IZ-28 3.80-fold,1.33-fold,and 1.32-fold respectively. Those might be part of the causes for the better storability of the late variety. It is suggested that endogenous ethylene level may be used as a physiological index for breeding and selecting new varieties with high storability.
