Abstract: Young embryos of w heat w ere irradiated and cultured in vi tro for select ion of resistant mutant s to pow dery mildew . Several variet ies including Longma 1, Lin 85-14, 832556 @ F63 Fo, 8361-4 @ PH82-2-2 Fo w ere tested from 1998 to 2000. T he results indicated that pow dery mildew resistant plant could be produced by cell culture and mutat ion. Comparing to the common v ariety, hybrid showed hig her induction rate and more useful variations. Seven pow dery mildew resistant plants, of which tw o plants show hig h resistance, w ere obtained from the rSC1 generat ion of the variety 832556 @ F63. The characterist ics of the pow dery resistant plants include shorter and thicker leaves, darker leaf color, reduced plant height , decrease in 1000-kernel weig ht , and irreg ular changes of kernel numbers in spokes.

Key words: Wheat, Resistance to pow dery mildew, Cell culture, Mutat ion
