Abstract: The results of study on the root inheritance and distribution in soil in high and short plant types of foxtail millet (Setaria italic (L.) Beav.) showed that, the root weight and activities at mature stage were geneticaly controlled. The root number in high plant type was more than that in short plant type. The relationship between root characters and yield was significant, the relationship of root characters with the yield characters was significant too.More root number, high root weight and suitable stem cut juice from root at mature stage were helpful to millet plant yield and the yield related characters.Great root system, large distribution in soil and suitable high activities in mature stage were the main reason why the good yield can be getted in high plant type.
