Abstract: The microstructure characteristics of stem in five rice strains (cultivars):52-7,51-15,51-22,Zhong8,and White pearl and the relation between the ones and the yield are observed and analyzed by the paraffin method. The results showed that layer number and development of collenchyma cell under epiderm and in vascular bundle sheath of outer circle and inner circle of rice with BADH cDNA have no distinctive features. The yield of the strain, which has less starch grains in ground tissue cells,is higher. Transgenic strains have the characteristics of micro-vascular bundle and little-vascular bundle. The ratio of total area of vascular bundle and area of stem wall in transgenic strains is bigger than that of control, but the average value is smaller than that of white pearl. The expression of BADH has enhanced the content of betaine in transgenic strains. More betaine and advanced conducting tissue are beneficial to the maintenance of normal metabolism, synthesization of photosynthate and formation of high yield under upland condition.
