Abstract: Peroxidase(POX) activity and isoenzyme electrophoregrams of shoots on 12 millet varieties with different resistance cultivated in plastic boxes were analysed. The results showed that after disease germ inoculation,POX activity of the immune varieties had a mean increase of 22.8%,and for sensitive varieties, the higher the sensitiveness, the higher the POX activities they got.The disease-sensitive varieties increased an average of 71.6%,and high disease-sensitive varieties increased a mean of 95.0%.For the isoenzyme zymogram of the immune ones no changes observated, while for those disease-sensitive ones, the higher the sensitiveness, the more zymogram changed. In comparation of 2-dimension ordination, two electrophoregram points of immune varieties, one of disease germ inoculated and one of the control, were at the same position,or close to each other, and averaged value was 3.1 While those for the disease-sensitive ones were far apart. The mean d value of sensitive ones were 12.2 and of high sensitive ones were 13.2.It is concluded that it is a quick mothed to use POX isoenzyme of millet shoots to identify the resistance to kernel smut of millet.

Key words: Foxtail millet, Shoot, Kernel smut of millet, POX isoenzyme
