Abstract: Two vegetable seeds (Sweet pepper hybrid 6, Chinese cabbage hybrid 55) with different seed miosture contents kept in airtight-packages went through the treatment of artificial ageing under the condition of 40℃ constant temperature for 4 days, 10 days, 20 days or 35 days respectively. The vigour of two vegetable seeds varied obviously with different seed moisture contents. The seed moisture content of 6.0% was the threshold for the vigour of sweet pepper and Chinese cabbage seeds kept in airtight-packages.When seed moisture content was above 6.0%, seed vigour was reduced greatly as ageing time extended. When seed moisture content was below 6.0%, the value was only reduced slowly as ageing time extended. The seed moisture content of 6.0% was the upper limit for sweet pepper and Chinese cabbage seeds kept in airtight-packages.

Key words: Moisture content, Airtight-package, Artificial ageing, Vegetable, Seed vigour
