Abstract: Anther development of nuclear male sterile and male fertile lines in foxtail millet was studied cytomorphologically in the first time, and a new concept of "open space" in fertile anther tissue was suggested. Anthers of heterozygotic ChA plants could not open because they could not form "open space". The pollen abortion of Jinda A and 338 A was complete. Pollens of Suanxi 28 and 350 A aborted at the microspore stage similarly, but a few microspores could normally develop into mature pollens. Both normal anther cascular bundle and abnormal one in the various materials showed great difference.

Key words: Foxtail millet, Nuclear male sterility, Microsporogenesis, Anther opening
