Abstract: Upland rice is one kind of crops which is sensitive to salt. We studied the germination and the chromosomal behavior of the root tip cells when upland rice seeds were treated with different NaCl solution density. The results showed that the germination rate, germination index and vigor index decreased. Abnormal chromosomal behavior of root tip cells emerged when the NaCl concentration was more than 100 mmol/L. The types of abnormal chromosomal behavior were micronucleus, multi-nucleus, chromosome lagging, chromosome sticking, bridge, chromosome fragment. And there existed a significantly positive correlation between the abnormal chromosomal behavior and the NaCl concentration.

Key words: Upland rice, NaCl, Germination rate, Abnormal chromosomal behavior
