Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cutting time and cutting height on ratoon ability of ratoon rice and its relationship with grain yield. The experiment was carried out with five cutting time at days after heading 18(T1),21(T2),24(T3),27(T4),30(T5) d,and three cutting height, namely 25(H1),35(H2),45(H3) cm,by using hybrid rice variety Yuxiang 203.The results showed that the ratoon ability increased significantly, but the yield of ratoon rice varied with no significant difference with increasing of cutting height. With postponing cutting time of the first crop, the grain yield of ratoon rice increased significantly first, and then decreased. Under cutting height at H1 and H2 treatments, the yield of ratoon rice obtained highest value at T3 treatments due to its higher ratoon ability, panicle number and 1000-grain weight and thereby, the total yield of the first crop and ratoon rice showed highest value among different cutting time. Under cutting height at H3 treatments, the yield of ratoon rice obtained highest value at T4 treatment resulting of more panicles and spikelets per panicle. But the total yield of the first crop and ratoon rice achieved highest value when cutting time at T5 treatment. Correlation analysis showed that the yield of ratoon rice was significantly and positively correlated with panicles, and ratoon ability significantly and positively correlated with peak tiller number and panicles. These results suggested that the ratoon ability affected the yield of ratoon rice by regulation of peak tiller number and panicles. The finding indicates that the treatment that 24 days after the full heading of the first crop combined with cutting height of H1 and H2, or 30 days combined with cutting height of H3 promotes the total yield of the first crop and ratoon rice.
