Breeding of Kang 4 and Kang 7 Sorghum Hybrids and Inheritance of the Resistance to Head Smut in Sorghum

Abstract

Abstract: Kang 4 and kang 7 sorghum hybrids were crossed with male sterile line Tx622A and restorer lines Jinliang5 and Xinliang7. The two hybrids had characters of high yield,high resistance to head smut and extensive adaptiveness. Their yields generally increased 15%～18%. Under artificial inoculation,their disease incidences were zero,however,the control was 824%.The two hybrids were major cultivars in Shanxi,Hebei, Shaanxi, Gansu, Tianjin etc.now. It was also studied that the resistance to head smut of hybrids and their parents and inheritance of resistance. The results showed that there were significant differences between hybrids and their parents:male sterile line Tx622A had high resistance to head smut and character of qualitative inheritance ,while male sterile line Tx3197A had low resistance to head smut and character of quantitative inheritance.
