Abstract: The Na+ content in germinating maize seeds was largely increased, but the Ca2+ content and the activity of α-amylase in germinating seeds were remarkably decreased under NaCl stress. Therefore, the germination of maize seeds was decreased and delayed by salt stress.Exogenous supply of Ca2+ increased the activity of α-amylase and the germination of maize seeds under NaCl stress.

Key words: NaCl stress, Maize seeds, Germination, α, -amylase
