Abstract: The relationship between excised leaf water loss rate(RWL)and yield components/plant traits was analyzed by using winter wheat genotypes varying remarkably in yield and plant height in 4 year experiments. It was demonstrated that significant difference in RWL existed among genotypes.Under most circumstances,RWL was correlated negatively with yield and grain weight, and positively with plant height. The results laid a principal basis for simultaneous selection for high yield and low RWL. It was found that genotypic rank varyed with the variation of water loss duration. Based upon the variation, four types of genotypes (continuously low, early low later high, early high alter low, and continuously high) were identified .Correlation between RWL and yield reduced with extended water loss duration. More remarkable difference among genotypes was revealed at 2-3 hours of water loss with greater physiological importance, therefore it is better to collect water loss parameters 2-3 hours after in vitro treatment. This renewed the method of using RWL 6-9 hours after in vitro treatmet.
