Abstract: "Under no-tillage and rainfed conditions, where water constitutes the limiting factor, the aim of this study is to obtain the higher production per unit of available water. The association among physiological factors, agronomic factors, and water-use efficiency(WUE) has a close-knit relationship, which confusion can lead to conceptual oversight and wrong decisions in implementing breeding programs for drought-prone environments.A field experiment was conducted in Jinan,Shandong,China(36°42'N,117°04'E) for 3-yr(2007-2009) to evaluate various varieties for their efficiency in water use. There is an apparent difference in WUE in yield of four different genotypes winter wheat, suggesting that potential genetic factors are a major determinant of WUE in yield. The results showed that different genotypes of wheat between the leaf area index,SPAD value, period of photosynthetic rate(Pn),the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),panicle rate and economic output with the size and growth and development were greater than the percentage change, showing obvious difference between genotypes.
