Abstract: Pot experiment was conducted at Luancheng Agro-Eco-Experimental station,Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS),to study the effects of fertilization and water supply to different layers of soil on physiological traits, root distribution and yield of winter wheat in the piedmont of Taihang Mountain. The results showed that, compared with traditional fertilization applied to top soil layer and irrigation in surface soil(CK),the treatments with fertilization and water applied to the whole soil profile(T3)and fertilizing to the whole soil profile and water applied to the top soil layer(T1),root biomass of winter wheat in top soil layers(0-90 cm)had no significant difference, but root biomass in deep soil layers(90-150 cm)significantly increased by 97.3 % and 57.0 %,respectively. For treatment with fertilization applied to top soil layer and water applied to the whole soil profile(T2),compared with CK,root biomass in top soil layers(0-90cm)decreased by 18.8 %,whereas root biomass in deep soil layers(90-150 cm)was similar.Photosynthesis(Pn),transpiration(Tr)and water use efficiency(WUE)of flag leaf and grain yield of winter wheat for T2 had no significant difference with CK.But Pn,Tr,WUE of flag leaf of winter wheat for T3 and T1,at the later growing stage, were improved significantly.Grain yield of T3 and T1 substantially increased by 46.0 % and 27.0 % compared with CK,respectively.
