Abstract: Chlorophyll content and antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves of cucumber and watermelon were tested in order to understand the effects of vermicompost-based substrate on heat tolerance of plug seedling. The results showed that high temperature stress decreased chlorophyll content in leaves of plug seedling and chlorophyll content with vermicompost-based substrate was significantly higher than that of control (n=3, p<0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities in leaves of plug seedling with vermicompost-based substrate increased under high temperature stress, but they decreased in control; The permeation rate of electrolyte and MDA content in control were 4.47%-102.31% and 33.69%-47.75% higher than that with vermicompost-based substrate under high temperature stress. It was suggested that cucumber and watermelon plug seedling with vermicompost-based substrate had stronger heat tolerance.
