Abstract: Environmental factors significantly affect the performance of the heat tolerance of winter wheat during maturity. The validity of three determinations, canopy temperature depression (CTD),grain filling and heat susceptibility index(HSI), was evaluated during 1997 - 2000 in Beijing. The HSI value reflected the sensitivity of plants to heat stress. Genotypes tolerant to heat stress could be identified by HSI of 1000 - kernel weight. CTD is a quick, convenient and valid method in evaluating the heat tolerance of winter wheat. On the other hand, the variety with a longer green lasting period often showed higher CTD. The genotype tolerant to heat stress with a moderatemature period could be used to select the heat tolernat genotype with a moderate mature period, simultaneously.Wheat cultivar Lu 936098 performed a good heat tolerance and a relatively stable 1000 - kernel weight during three-year trials.
