A Study on the Loss of Head Smut Resistance in Sorghum ATX 3197

Abstract

Abstract: Stock seeds of sorghum ATX 3197(from Texas A & M University, symbolized as 3197A(S)were used to make Jinza No.1(S), Jinza No.4(S)and Jinza No.5(S). A comparision on succeptibility to head smut(Sphac-elotheca reiliana (Kuhn)Clinton)was made between 3197A(S)and 3197A together with the 6 hybrids derived from them under the condition of artificial inoculation. The result showed that the succeptibility of 3197A per se and its hereditability to head smut had not changed significantly, which suggested that the loss of resistance of 3197A was due to the change of physiological strains of head smut.
