Abstract: Effects of physical restriction in non productive tiller on root characteristics and nutrient absorption were studied using two rice cultivars,Peizataifeng and Yuejingsimiao, respectively,in a pot experiment with water culture. In this study, physical restrictions were done by designing different transplanting holes which was 20,28,35 mm,denoted as D1,D2 and D3,respectively.Compared to D1 and D3,total grain number per panicle and yield in Peizataifeng and Yuejingsimiao under D2 were significantly increased.Total root length, superficial area, volume, tips and forks at panicle initiation in Peizataifeng and Yuejingsimiao was remarkably higher than that under D2 than D1,respectively.Compared to D1,the content of phosphorus and potassium of stem at heading stage in Peizataifeng was remarkable higher than that under D2 and D3,respectively.Compared to D1 and D3,there was significant increase in total potassium accumulation under D2 at the heading stage in rice.Total nitrogen accumulation and phosphorus accumulation and potassium accumulation was significant higher under D3 than that under D1 at the panicle initiation stage and heading stage in Yuejingsimiao, respectively.Correlation analysis showed that there was significant positive correlation between root length at heading stage and total nitrogen accumulation and potassium accumulation. There was also significant positive correlation between superficial area and volume of rice and total nitrogen accumulation, phosphorus accumulation and potassium accumulation. And it was found that there was remarkable positive correlation between average root diameter and total phosphorus accumulation and potassium accumulation.
