Abstract: R₁₁₁,a somaclonic variant line of sorghum,was obtained through tissue culture from a sorghum restorer line Jinliang 5,which had excellent comprehensive agronomic feature and high combining ability,bat was with weak resistance to disease and poor quality.R₁₁₁ had better head smut resistance,lodging resistance,drought hardiness,barren tolerance and higher quality in contrast with Jinliang 5. The novel hybrid was selected by the test of combining R₁₁₁ with several main sterile lines.The result showed that the selection of excellent clonic variant line through tissue culture.was an effective method for creating new germplasm resoures. The method not only could preserve the merit of its parents but also could improve the weakness of its parents.
