Abstract: The sensitivity of root cap cells of twelve cotton varieties to toxin produced by Verticillium dahliae had been tested. The results were compared with the disease index of seedlings inoculated with V. codidia and the wilt index of seedlings immersed in the toxin. The experimental results showed that death rate of root cap cells treated with toxin was highly correlated with the disease index and the wilt index. The coefficients of correlation were 0.719 and 0.816 respectively. The results indicated that large-scale screening for resistance to V dahliae can be accomplished accuratel yand rapidly by using this method.
