Abstract: The Myostatin(MSTN) gene and protein expressions in the skeletal muscle of Ujumqin Sheep were studied during its growth.RT-PCR and ELISA were applied to detect the relative expression level of MSTN gene and protein, respectively,in the skeletal muscle of Ujumqin sheep at the age of 1,3,6,9,12 and 18 months. The relative MSTN gene expression level was in the descending sequence of 6>3>9>1>12>18-month old Ujumqin sheep. The MSTN gene expression was highest at the age of 6-month,and was significantly different from that of 1,3,9,12 and 18-month (P<0.05).The detected MSTN gene expression was not significantly different among samples collected from 1,3,9 and 12-month old sheep(P>0.05).The protein expression level was in the ascending sequence of 1<3<6<9<12<18-month old sheep.Samples from 1,3 and 6-month old (P<0.05),but not 9,12 and 18 (P>0.05),sheep were significantly varied. The relative gene expression level of MSTN showed an increasing trend before 6-month old and decreased afterwards. The expression level of MSTN protein was increasing during the whole period.
