Abstract: The determination of the critical soil available P value plays significant role in P recommendation invegetable fields. Most vegetables, with the characteristics of shallow root system and low root length density, especially under off-season cultivation in protected field, required high P supply level, in comparison to cereal crops. Thepaper summarized the results on crop responses to soil P fertility from 20 published papers and selected field trialsin the last 20 years, in order to get the critical value of soil available P supply in vegetable fields. The results showedthat the critical value of soil available P in open field of North China without manure as basal fertilization was 27. 0mg /kg P, the critical value of soil P value in fruit vegetable was 56. 7 mg /kg P, significantly higher than that of leafyvegetable 39. 1 mg /kg P. The critical value of soil available P in-season decreased with manure application. Thecritical value of soil available P in protected fields was higher than those in open fields with manure.
