Abstract: Burley tobacco was used to investigate the availability of early identification of nicotine converters by etheryl treatment, and the effects of sampling time and leaf position on the identification results. The results showed that the early-identified converters by etheryl treatment matched all the converters identified after normal air-curing, and was able to identify some low converters which was hard to be identified normally. The percent nicotine conversion by early identification was higher than that measured after air-curing, so as to increase the accuracy and availability of identification. Based on the early identification, the non-converters, low converters and high converters were self-crossed respectively and seeds were produced. The 3 populations present 8.6%, 59.8% and 100% converters, respectively, in next generation, indicating the high effectiveness of the identification method. The variety was able to be improved by identification and removal of converters from the population. The identification process could be carried out from seedling stage to pre-flowering, although sampling at 4-6 weeks after transplanting was easier to handle. Leaves from all positions could be used in the early identification, while the bottom leaves were ideal because of their shorter inducing time.
