Abstract: The observation of flag leaf cell morphology and the diurnal photosynthetic changes were carried out in 1999 growing seasons, using field grown wheat plants of 19 winter wheat cultivars as materials, which had been cultivated extensively in North China from early 1950's to 1990's.Wheat breading improved leaf cell morphology. With the order of evolutional succession of the cultivars, the number of mesophyll cells with multi link in flage leaves increased, the mesophyll tissuses in flag leaves became thicker, and the layers of mesophyll cells in flag leaf transections became more. The diurnal changes of photosynthetic rate of these cultivars showed that the mid napping of photosynthesis in updata cultivars was anesised, and their ability using weak light was stronger, and maybe this is related to more multi link cells, thicker mesophyll tissue and more mesophyll cell layer.
