Abstract: The dry matter production, photosynthetic characters and grain plumpness of intersubspecific hybrids, intervarietal hybrids and ordinary varieties of rice were studied comparatively. The results showed that the dry matter production of intersubspecific hybrids was greater than that of intervarietal hybrids and ordinary varieties in the early gtowth stage. But in the later growth period, the weak dry matter production ability, low net assimilation rate and the growth rate of the population, imbalance of dry matter partitioning among organs, big“sink”capacity and premature decay were considered factors to contribute to the ilness of grain plumpness. And how to improve the grain plumpness was also discussed according to the results.

Key words: Rice, Dry matter production, Photosynthetic characters, Grain plumpness
