Abstract: The development processes of anthers and microspores of C-cytoplas-mic male-sterile lines and its maintainers in corn were observed and compared by the light and the electron microscope. The results of the study showed that the earliest abortion of the C-microspores occurred in the young microspore stage, their full abortion occurred in the miol-1-nucleate microspore stage, and the disintegration of the tapetum occurred before flowering stage. At the young microspore stage, numerous "cup shaped" plastids can be observed in the C-tapetal cells. The mainly cytological reason resulting the abortion is the abnormal function of the tapetal cells.
