Abstract: Multivariate genetic analysis was used to analyse 16 quantitative characters in sorghum. The results showed that most of the correlative heritabilities between characters were lower than heritabilities of characters. When selection intensity being equal, efficiencies of indirect selection to many characters were lower than that of the direct selection, and selecting primary branches according to its phenotype could increase secondary branches and grains per head obviously. The results of correlative heritabilities path analysis indicated that both the direct effect of grains per head on grain weight per head and the indirect effect of each character on grains per head were the highest among 10 yield characters. Grains per head, therefore, played a key role in improving sorghum yield. The analytic results of correlative heritabilities were coincided with the practices in sorghum breeding.
