Abstract: Heavy metals content were detected in 25 surface water samplers,8 shallow groundwater samples and 19 rice samples around the spoil area of the smeltery, revealing the content of C,Zn,Pb,Cd and As in the samples. The results showed that surface water was polluted by Cd and As over 40. 0 %of the samples exceeded the concentration of official standards when the water was used for crops in both paddy and upland. Shallow groundwater was under threat. And rice was contaminated by Cu,Pb,Cd and As. Especially, the pollution from Cd was serious for rice, all of the samples were over the standard and 76. 9%of the samples overlooked the serious pollution level. The maximum value for Cd was up to 37. 6 times higher than the standard (0. 2 mg/ kg). There were 38. 5%,23. 1% and 15. 8% rice samples which were polluted by Cu,As and Pb,respectively.
