Abstract: RFLP analysis was carried out on 36 rice elite line. Sterility of these 162 rice hybrids was studied in groups and in types. The study on genetic basis of hybrid sterility showed that intra subspecific hybrids had much higher spikelet fertility than inter subspecific hybrids, whose sterility was caused by extensive genetic differentiation of indica and japonica rice.RFLP analysis showed that most of rice hybrids (71.7%) one of whose parents was wide compatibility varieties had nomal hybrid sterility. The genetic basis of these rice hybrids was special. Their parental distance was farther than typical intra subspecific hybrids, and less than typical inter subspecific hybrids. The study also showed that establishment, improvement and utilization potentialities of wide compatibility gene and some of its genetic breeding problems related to heterosis performance needed to be solved together.
