Abstract:
Based on 4-years' study during 1986 to 1990,diurnal changes in leaf water potential varied with water amount and timing, and growth stages.Changes in leaf water potential with growth advance showed that sharp declines in pre-dawn leaf water potential occurred at the anthesis stage. This was inconsistent with the changein soil water content.Mid-day leaf water potential changed periodically and varied among years with different seasonal rainfall. There was a curvilinear relation between leaf water potential and soil water content, and the correlation of leaf Water potential to soil water content in deeper layers increased with growth stage. There was a close relation between leaf water potential at the anthesis stage and yield.Water-saving practice by early stress could allow wheat to achieve high yield by induced osmotic regulation and turgor maintenance.Thresholds of mid-day leaf water potential at major growth stages for water saving and high yield were suggested based on seasonal rainfall patterns.
