Abstract: In the ten years (1981-1990) of study on Rice Blast fungus physiological races, a total of 435 Rice Blast fungus isolates were identified and classified into 7 groups, 12-18 species. The characters of species distribution in different areas were found, and Group ZG was identified to be the dominant race. This was consistant with the resistant stability of cul-tivars. The virulence of the most isolates was determined with Japanese single-gene varieties, with lower virulence to Pi-Zt, Pi-b, Pi-ta, Pi-ta2, Pi-Km genotype varieties, and higher virulence to other varieties. Studies on variability of Rice Blast fungus showed that single spores of Rice ear-stem Blast isolated from different varieties or areas, belonged to different races. The physiological races of single spores from the same disease spot showed much difference after subscultures therefore, the variablity of Rice Blast fungus physiological Races was high.
