Abstract: Gas chromatography was used to analyze the alkaloid composition and content of air-cured burley leaves from different areas and varieties; the proportion of converters and the conversion rate were calculated. The results indicat- ed that the nicotine conversion level in Sichuan burley tobacco was significantly higher than that in other producing ar- eas. The leading variety Xuanhan-5had serious problem of nicotine conversion, especially for the narrow-leaf type which is currently the most popular variety, with the proportion of converters of 96% and the average conversion rate of 34. 8%. The broad leaf type Xuanhan- 5 also had high conversion levels. Hybrid Dabai had relatively less problem of nicotine conversion, the proportion of converters in 3 locations being 18. 0%, 18. 0% and 52. 0%,respectively, and the average conversion rate being 3. 5%,3. 1%and 14. 3%,which can be used after screening and improvement. In the population of Eyan 1 and TN90,some converterswere also found at different levels. The newly developed hybrids Dabai 3 and Dasuo 24 had serious problems of nicotine conversion, with a converter proportion of 100%, thus the systemic selections and im- provementswere required. The variation of nicotine conversion was found in different locations for the same variety.
