Abstract: To study the influence of short-day(SD)treatment on the frost hardiness(FH)and the parameters of electrical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)in stems of Ligustrum vicaryi during the hardening,as well as to find the relation between the EIS parameters and the FH,and perfect EIS method for studying FH on plant, the cutting plants of Ligustrum vicaryi was short-day treated before frost hardening on 6 September,2006,and the natural photoperiod was used as control. Then the FH was assessed by methods of EIS and conventional electrolyte leakage(EL),and the FH results between the two methods were compared. The results indicated that the FH of the stem in plants treated with SD was hardier about 3℃ than that in control plants during the hardening. The FH had high correlation with relaxation time(τ)of stem without controlled freezing, extracellular resistance(re)of stems after controlled freezing tests and the water content of the stems. The EIS is one of the most promising methods for assessing FH,especially without employing a controlled freezing test.
