Abstract: The autotetraploid plant of sesame may be effectively induced by immersing seeds with 0.3%-0.5% colchicine water solution under 28℃ for 24 hours. The autotetraploids are characterized by their thicker stems, larger leaves and flower organs, bigger seeds, slower plant growth, and lower setting percentage as compared with the diploids. The number of somatic chromosome in autotetraploids is 52.The pollen grain and seed fertility of autotetraploids are related to the synapsis of homologous chromosomes. The more the number of guadrivalents(Ⅳ) or two divalents (Ⅱ+Ⅱ) formed at synapsis, the higher the seed fertility and setting percentage.
