Abstract: To understand the biochemical mechanism of cytoplasmic male sterilityCMS),.we used isonuclear alloplasmic line on Mo17 nuclear background with three male-sterile cytoplasms T. C. Tang Xu S) and normal N) cytoplasm for dynamic study of respiration and energy metabolism system. It was found that the activity of cytochrome oxidase and the content of ATP. of male-sterile anthers were greatly reduced during the stage of microsporogenesis and development. By surveying the author's published research works about the total respiration activity and cyanide-resistant respiration of CMS in maize, the appearance of "Energy Deficiency" of male-sterile anthers was also discussed in this paper.

Key words: Cytoplasmic male sterility, Cytochrome oxidase, Adenosine triphosphate(ATP), Enerev deficiency
