Abstract: Plant extracts can improve rumen fermentation, evaluate efficiency of protein digestion, mitigatemethane emission, and so on. These functions are based on controlling the composition and quantity of rumen microbe. Therefore, more researchers are increasingly concerned about the effect of plant extracts on microbe. This review discussed the effects of plant extracts such as saponins, tannins and essential oils on the rumen, bacteria, protozoa, fungi and archaea.
