Abstract: In this study,a gradient reduction sink method was used to control the source /sink ratio to illustrate the relationship between phytohomone levels and source /sink ratio in rice grains. We investigated IAA,ABA,ZT and GA3 levels for the grains from different position of the panicle and studied the relationship of phytohormone dynamic changes with the endosperm cell increasing rates as well as with the grain development. Our results showed that the contents of ABA and IAA were higher, whilst the contents of ZT and GA3 were lower in grains. Before grain filling stage, the IAA content of lower grains was higher than that of upper grains, whilst it was contrary after grain filling stage. For the other phytohormones, the contents of upper grains were higher than that of lower grains, and it was also contrary after grain filling stage. There was fluctuation in the differences among phytohormones of different position grains. After the source /sink ratio was changed, the overall content of phytohormone increased, and the weak sink grains showed a wider changing rang. Different position grains and different phytohormones showed different changing characters. The changing range of phytohormone for the different treat and same position grains did not add to the degree of grain treatment. The phytohormone levels showed delayed effects for the endosperm cell increasing during grain filling stage. Whilst the phytohormone levels showed both delay and instant effects for grain weight increase before and after grain filling stage
