Preliminary Report on Improvement Result to Popcorn Using Normal Corn Germplasm and Backcross

Abstract

Abstract: The expansion characteristics and their relationships ith the two kinds of parents were analyzed through F₃,BC₁₁F₂, BC₁₂F₂ of 20 normal corn @ popcorn crosses made from 5 normal corn inbreds and 4 popcorn lines. The results showed that normal corn germplasms had great effect on the expansion characteristics of the offsprings from normal corn @ popcorn crosses. Proper normal inbreds selecting and their cross-making with popcorn inbreds play a great role in popcorn breeding in this condition.All the expansion characters were low, but they were greatly improved through only one generation backcrossing to popcorn inbreds. The highest values of 3 expansion characters for BC₁₁F₂ and BC₁₂F₂ were 750, 2200, 1100 compared with F₃( its value was considered 100), which basically reached to the expansion indexes of popcorn. There was no significant difference between BC₁₁F₂ and BC₁₂F₂.
