Abstract: Planting pattern affects maize on light availability. Our aim was to explore the processes that how planting patterns did affect light interception and RUE. In this study, maize were planted in two patterns as follows: narrow-wide row 40 + 160(KZ,6. 4 plants /m2),uniform row 65(CK,6. 4 plants /m2),we examine the mechanisms of maize canopy during canopy development period. three planting patterns were compared in fraction of light interception( F), leaf area index(LAI),extinction coefficient(K), radiation use efficiency(RUE). The result showed that, the parameter of F in KZ was significant lower than CK,while LAI was observed almost equal to CK; the K values exhibit a feature of CK >KZ; the advantage of RUE in KZ was manifest at the same density(6. 4 plants /m2) among different treatments. We concluded that in same density, planting pattern had significant effect on light interception and RUE.
