Abstract: A study on the culture characteristics of avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) strain L 2Z in continuous cell line BGM 70 was carried out. The strain blindly passaged to the third generation in BGM 70 cell line caused pronounced cytopathic effects (CPE) , and produced consistently CPE from the third passage. These results from the agar gel diffusion precipitin (AGP) , indirect immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) , indirect immunoenzyme assay (IIEA) and negatively stained electron microscope (NSEM) techniques showed that the strain L 2Z adapted to BGM 70 cell line had good multiplication characteristics, and its replicated area was cytoplasma. This paper is the first report on the successful cultivation and multiplication of avian encephalomyelitis virus in continuous cell line.

Key words: Avian encephalomyelitis virus(AEV), Continuous cell line BGM 70, Cultrue characteristics, Cytopathic effects(CPE)
