Abstract: The effects of drought stress on photosynthetic characteristics and nitrogen metabolism in flue-cured tobacco leaves were studied with the cultivar NC89(Nicotiana tabacum L.) under pot experiment. The results showed that the chlorophyll content, the Hill reactivity of chloroplasts, net photosynthetic rate and the nitrate reductase(NR)activity in flue-cured tobacco leaves decreased, while the proline(PRO)content in the leaveg increased under drought stress. The rate of respiration raised under mild drought stress, but declined under serious drought stress. The above-mentioned indices changed with soil water conditions,it indicated that the responses of these indices to drought stress were sensitive.
