Abstract: Rice ratooning is the production of a second rice crop from the stubble left behind after the first seasonal rice harvest. To clarify the reason caused the yield differences in rationing rice cultivation and select ratoon rice varieties adapted to the region along the Yangtze River in Anhui Province, the field experiment was carried out to compare the growth period, rationing ability, yield and its components of the main and ratoon rice using 9 hybrid rice varieties as test materials. The results showed that the effective panicles was responsible for the yield differences in main crops, and the effective panicles as well spikelets per panicle caused the yield differences of ratoon crops.Zhunliangyou 608 was the prior ratoon rice variety with the ratoon yield of 5.27 t/ha and total grain yield (main crop plus ratoon) of 13.59 t/ha in this region.Wandao 119 and Xinliangyou 6 were recommended as candidate varieties for higher grain yield in the main rice, stronger rationing ability as well larger grain yield potential in the ratoon rice.It indicated that the key approaches to enhancing ratoon grain yield and total grain yield were to increase the effective panicle number per unit area, spikelets per panicle and 1000-grain weight on the basis of maintaining the high seed setting rate.
