Abstract: 3751 noctuids species belonging to 845 genera of 20 subfamilies in China have been reported. They fall into four faunal elements:Eurytopic,Palaearctic,Oriental and East Asian. The East Asian element is the predominant one, making up 51.35% of the total. The Oriental, the Palaearctic and the Eurytopic takes 25.51%,18.45% and 2.26% respectively. There are clear differences in distribut ion and fauna organizat ion of noctuids in different provinces. The provinces rich in noctuid species are Taiwan,Yunnan,Xizang,Sichuan,Hubei,Henan,Hunan,Zhejiang,Xinjiang.Multi-variate similarity analysis indicates that the distribution of noctuids in Taiwan is close to that in the Central China Region. The distribution in Inner Mongolia is close to that in the North-East Region.A new region was nominated as Qinling- Huaihe Region which includes Gansu,Shaanxi,Henan,Hubei,Anhui and Jiangsu. In this new region,East Asia element is predominant, and Palaearctic element is equivalent to the Oriental element.
