Abstract: This research studied the cell growth characteristics and hypericins (hypericin and pseudohypericin) metabolite production in Hypericum sampsonii Hance cell suspension culture. The result as followed: growth period of suspension cell was as long as 18 d; the exponential phase was 4-10 d. Hypericins arrived 46.06 μg/g (DW) at 10 day's culture, and its production was related to cell growth rate. Consume of soluble carbohydrate that played a key role in cell growth and hypericins metabolism, effected accumulation of fresh weight of cell and hypericins.

Key words: Hypericum sampsonii Hance, Hypericin, Pseudohypericin, Cell suspension culture
