Abstract: In this paper we studied the soil compaction brought about by mechanization and its impact on crop yield from the interrelations among machinery, soil and crops, and probes the causes of high energy consumed by today’s tractors as well as problems of separation of farm machinery from agronomy.Based on the results of investigation,an idea of and a design for a wide-span field operator have been proposed for the purpose of thoroughly solving the problem of soil compaction and damage caused by machinery, greatly reducing the consumption of fuel, and suiting China’s characteristic of intensive farming and multiple cropping.

Key words: Tractor, Soil compaction, Energy consumption, Wide-span field operator
