Abstract: Nitrate leaching and ground water pollution have become a concern in North China Plain. In this review, the characteristics of the groundwater pollution in North China plain were summarized firstly, then some studies are presented to show the NO3——N distribution and accumulation in the soil profile under different agriculture management, improper irrigation and fertilizer input caused NO3——N leaching was also presented. On the basis of those studies the best management practices were listed to prevent the nitrate leaching from the wheat-corn double crop system. It also point out that study of NO3-N leaching rate, reuse of deep soil NO3——N,establishing the NO3——N loss evaluating system should be emphasized in the future.

Key words: North China, Plain Groundwater pollution Nitrate accumulation, Nitrate leaching, Water balance
