Abstract: A strain N2-2,which synthesizes a kind of viscosity extracellular biopolymer, was isolated from soil at Jinji road. According to the characterist ics of morphology, physiology and biochemistry tests and the comparison of 16S rDNA sequence, strain N2-2 was identified as Rahnella sp.. If N2-2 bacteria culturing solution was sprinkled on the surface of sand, a compact bacteria crust conglutinat ing sand could be formed. The crust can not only improve water retent ion capac-i ty of sand but also increase the survival rate of seedlings.

Key words: Biological soil crusts, Rahnella sp., Classification and ident ification, Water retention
