Abstract: The outer ultrastructure and distribution of forewings sensilla in adult Locusta migratoria manilensis have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. According to characteristic of outer ultrastructure and distribution of forewings sensilla, there are mainly three types sensilla on the forewings of adult L. migratoria manilensis. Type Ⅰ sensilla range in length from 30-60 μm and diameter from 5-10 μm, with smooth surface and bulgy base of the sensilla. They chiefly distribute on the basal jugal region and costa region of the dorsal surface and on the basal jugal region, vannal region and costa region of the ventral surface. The number of type Ⅰ sensilla are (512.6±36.0) on the dorsal surface and (1278.8±67.8) on the ventral surface. Type Ⅱ sensilla are about 100-300 μm in length and 3-5 μm in diameter and inserted into sockets that have a raised rim. They locate on costa and subcosta of the dorsal surface and subcosta and radius on the ventral surface. The number of type Ⅱ sensilla are (107.8±5.4) on the dorsal surface and (57.4±2.6) on the ventral surface. Type Ⅲ sensilla range in length from 20-40 μm and diameter from 5-10 μm and are inserted into sockets that have a raised rim, with a bent on the tip. The surface of the type Ⅲ sensilla has shallow grooves. They mainly locate on the cubitus and radius sector of both dorsal and ventral surface. The number of type Ⅲ are (95.4±2.9) on the dorsal surface and (38.2±1.5) on the ventral surface. In addition, the number of different sensilla have been compared between the dorsal surface and the ventral surface, as well as between adult females and males. There are significant difference (P<0.01) between two surfaces. Females have more number of type Ⅰ sensilla on the dorsal surface and type Ⅲ sensilla on the ventral surface than those of males (P<0.05). There are no significant difference in the number of other types senailla between two sexes.
