The normal and vitrified plantlets of Isatis indigotica Fort. cultured in vitro were experiment materials, the changes of activitities of antioxidant enzyme and stress by oxygen free radicals were investigated. The results showed that:in the course of culture of Isatis indigotica Fort. shoots, the activity of Peroxidase( POD) in both normal and vitrified shoots increased at first and then decreased.The activity of Catalase( CAT) decreased at first and then increased.The activity of Superoxide dismutase(SOD) andMalondiadehyde ( MDA) content were gradually increased. The activities of CAT and SOD in vitrified shoots were lower than those in normal shoots, but MDA levels in vitrified shoots was higher than that in nor - mal shoots. It can be inferred that the function of protective enzymes of vitrified shoots was abnormal, so the vitrified shoots were stressed and destroyedby oxygen free radicals more heavily than normal shoots. In addition, the belts of Perox - idase isozymes of vitrified shoots lost or added compared with normal shoots. This result indicated that the expression of isozymes was abnormal and the hereditary stability of vitrified shoots have changed.
