Abstract: Coccidiostat effect of f ive Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions was studied through prophylactic trials and therapeut ic tests using chickens artificially infected with Eimeria tenella. The five prescriptions were made of different compatible proportions of herbs out of 13 Chinese medicinal herbs (Changshan, Qinghao, Chaihu, Kushen, Kuliangen,Huangqi and etc. ). The result was: in prophylactic trials, the anticoccidial index (ACI) of prescription 4 group(0.5 mL/ d) was 110. 07, the highest among the five prescriptions, and was 193% that of the posit ive control group. The survival rate of this group was 100%, and the oocyst index was 20 (comparatively low); The survival rate in prescription4 high dose group (1.0 mL/ d) was 95% (comparatively high); Survival rates of prescription 1 and 3 group inprophylactic trials were both 93.33% (comparatively high), and oocyst index of both groups in prophylact ic trials andtherapeutic tests were 20, which was lower than other prescription groups and positive control group. The results indicatedthat prescriptions with higher compatible proportion of Changshan could reduce the oocyst index significantly, and with higher compatible proportion of Qinghao could remarkably improve the survival rates of chicken artificially infected with Eimeria tenella.
